How to Start a Finance Blog
A Step by Step Dummy Proof Guide

Businesswoman using laptop

Financial blogging spells everything professional. Not every Tom, Dick and Harry can do financial blogging. For starters, you need to know all the finance jargon. Knowing what is a cheque book is not enough. Sorry to discourage you mate, but if you are just a financial novice, then it is going to be a bumpy ride, but never say never.

Finance is a broad topic. The potential is literally unlimited. Imagine this; Forbes has been writing financial news for the last 100 years and perhaps 100 more years to come. You can opt to specialize in a specific niche under the finance blanket or you can decide to be a jack of all trades. Your choice.

Well, today I am not here to talk about by prowess in finance or my masters in finance (kidding). I will show you how to get your finance blog up within an hour. I have prepared an easy to follow guide and accompanied it with a step-by-step video for a more hands on approach.

How to start your own Finance Blog in 3 Easy Steps

In this guide, I have compiled three easy to follow steps that will help you set up your finance blog. Following the three-step guide is a comprehensive video tutorial on the same for people who find it difficult to understand the text. So without any further ado…

1. Choose and Buy your Domain

What’s a Domain? A domain is like a physical address to your website. Your domain name is the command that will tell your visitor’s computer to download your webpage to their browsers. A domain name is really important since it will be your brand. Guess what’s Forbes Magazine domain? www.forbes.com.

An ideal domain should be short, easy to understand and remember and should have either a .com or .net prefix. You can buy the domain of your choice but if you want to save a few dollars, then you can claim your free domain by buying a BlueHost package.

2. Buy a Hosting Package

A host is a remote computer that provides client stations (your visitor’s devices) with access to files and printers as shared resources to a computer network. That sounded geeky? When someone types your domain name on their browser, your computer will send a request to the host and the host computer will respond with your blog page!

You’ve already figured out that a host will determine the availability of your website. Finding a reliable host is not an option. From years of experience, I recommend BlueHost for all your hosting needs because:

a. It is simple to use. In fact registration takes only seconds

b. They will give you a free domain for every purchase of a hosting package

c. They have a 24 hours, 7 days a week customer care desk that is always happy to help

d. They are affordable

[Disclosure] BlueHost gives me a small commission for my referral and it doesn’t add anything to your cost. This helps me continue to provide lots of free information for bloggers.

3. Install WordPress

I hope you’re still with me. Lastly, you will need to install a blog software to your BlueHost control panel. And since this guide is all about simplicity, I recommend that you use WordPress. WordPress is not about simplicity. 80% of the websites in the internet are powered by WordPress. WordPress offers you powerful tools that will make your blog appear and feel professional. Installing WordPress in BlueHost is just a single click affair like you will see below.

If you need a visual step by step guide to creating your own political blog, I’ve created a simple video that will walk you through each of these steps so you can see how it is done yourself. Watch this video, and then follow the link, which will bring you to BlueHost where you can purchase your domain and hosting.

Tips for the beginner Finance Blogger

Starting your own finance blog is easy. We cannot say the same for managing a popular finance blog. Reason? The web is full of them, and they come in all sizes, big and small. I have prepared a little something that I believe you will like.

  • Post Regularly and With Fresh Content
You don’t have to post daily, or even weekly. But you should dedicate at least three sittings a week to do regular, well researched and written thorough posts. If you find the time, try to publish shorter articles in between to cover up for the days you will be busy (with other bigger articles). Remember, having fresh content is the fastest way to get noticed. If you don’t have the time to really write yourself, hire others to manage the blog for you.
  • Read the Financial news and reports
Read established blogs like Wallstreet Journal. Secondly, stay informed and updated. Don’t miss the business news. This will give you ideas for the posts that you write, as well as keep you up to date with what is happening around you.
  • Subscribe to other people’s blog feeds
You are not an island in this industry. There are those who came before you. There are those who are beginning like. Always strive to find out what other people are writing. Subscribe to other blogs’ feeds and let the owner know you are following their feeds. Most of them will follow your feeds too. This is what we call Networking.
  • It is not a guessing game
You will have to go all pro on this. You cannot afford to give inaccurate information. Your visitors will be intellectuals who are probably following other blogs or working in the company you are blogging about. If you are not sure of something, always acknowledge it. And rule of the thumb: quote your source.
  • Diversify
I know you probably have a blueprint of your blog. That’s really nice. It will help you stay focused. However, it is prudent to diversify a little bit while starting. Test the waters on the stocks, forex, tax etc. then you can establish what your readers want and stick to it.
