Having Fun While Becoming a Better Web Writer; Matthew on the Rough Draft Podcast

October 8, 2015

Have you ever listened to the Rough Draft Podcast?

I highly recommend it if you want to get better at writing for the web.

You see, Demian Farnworth (who hosts Rough Draft) is a talented web writer who loves to teach hungry pupils the writing tips he’s learned over the years as a web writer and blogger.

He also happens to be a good friend, and I had the privilege of learning web writing techniques under his direct tutelage for two years.

My segments on this podcast were a LOT of fun! (I got to act silly! Always a plus while building a business. 🙂 )

I highly recommend Rough Draft, which you can subscribe to on iTunes.

There are already 100 episodes for you to browse. This particular episode I’m on is called  The Greatest Storytelling Guide This Side of Saturn.

This show is all about story telling and includes some interesting segments on Joseph Campbell, Myths, The Hero, The Point, along with my humorous take on the top ten jobs that will be in demand after the apocalypse.

And I even sing. (That was a surprise to me.)

Podcasts make for great listening while you’re driving, working out, laying in a hammock…

Rough Draft is definitely a podcast every growing blogger should check out.

After you give it a listen, shoot a tweet to Demian and let him know what you think (and tell him Matthew says hello.)

And I’ll be happy to discuss whatever’s on your mind in the comments.

Spent an hour last night, listening to the Ro-Draft podcast. Damien is an excellent story teller, and the background music, fit the podcast, to a tee. Enjoyed the ad stories, right off the bat, then Campbell’s 17point story outline. I even enjoyed your silly Apocalypse selection!

Being only a high school grad, Damien lost me on the Greek Mythology story. But that particular story, is where Damien shines, as a story teller.

The lady near the end, gave a wonderful condensed Campbell outline. I learned a great deal, and am rethinking how to write some stories, I have in mind.

Your ditty, at the end of the show, was courageous, but don’t give up your day job! 😉

A few points on the podcast:

    1. It was way too long. After about 20-30 minutes, I tend to lose interest. In fact, I paused the show at 3 different times to take a break.

    2. Damien’s outline of the show, and his story telling was superb, although I almost lost interest, before he got to Campbell.

      Hey Sgt. Mac,

Stick with Rough Draft, you won’t be sorry. Listen to some other episodes and your blog will thank you late. 🙂
I know Demian appreciates your feedback, as I do whenever you email me or comment.

Final point: I’ve always sung in my spare time, so I won’t quit my day job, but you might hear my golden pipes again sometime. 😉

Matt…just jiving you on the singing, lol, you have a good voice.

I don’t have a blog at this writing, but had several military blogs off and on since 2000. I’m trying to determine, if I want to bring it back, or go somewhere else.

Will definitely listen to more of the the Ro-Draft.

Was wondering if you will have another podcast, as was not able to join in. If not, would like to send you a short spiel on myself and why I applied. Let me know. 😉

Thank you sir for the kind words. I really appreciate the feedback. And the encouragement. I’m really interested in the fact that I lost you at one point because of the complexity of the show … I’ll be noodling on how I can fix that.

But I don’t know … I think Matt should quit his day job! He’s got a dreamy voice. 😀

Interesting that the podcast, is called Ro-Draft. The best, little free program, I ever used for writing goes by the same name. BTW, just listened to another one of Damien’s podcasts, and found this neat little program, called Hemingway Editor.

Paid the ten bucks for the download, and just edited the story I submitted to Matt, for the scholarship, to see what it would do. If anyone like me is just starting out, you can’t miss, with this easy to use, little program. Terrific, and I could afford it, to boot!
