How to Start an Advice Blog
A Step by Step Dummy Proof Guide

Are you the person everyone runs to for advice? Are you a peer counselor? Do you love dishing out (I had to use this one) advice? Then you might be the next biggest advice blogger the internet has ever produced.

If you think you can do this, then I am here to guide and inspire you on how to start your own advice blog from scratch. This guide is simple to follow since I will keep all the tech Jargon to myself. In the first part, I have prepared a three step guide and in the second part I have done a step-by-step video tutorial for a better understanding.

How to Start your own Advice Blog in 3 steps

I will probably ask you to spare at least thirty minutes. Beginning your own blog is not as hard as some blogs make it look. I want to one day get an email from you telling me how you are changing lives through your blog. So let’s begin our journey…

1. Identify your domain and pay for it

In case you are wondering, a domain name is the name of your blog site. It also forms part of the address to your blog. Visitors can either type the whole web address on their browsers or they can google your domain. To make it easier for people to find you, make sure your domain name is simple to remember and short enough for it not to be bulky.

Additionally, your domain name should have a .com or .net prefix, since they are easy to remember. However, these are the most expensive domain prefixes. Good news, instead of buying the domain, simply sign up for a hosting package with BlueHost and get a free domain.

2. Pay for Hosting

Hosting is a service provided by a web host. A web host is someone or a company that owns resources capable of storing your blog elements and providing these elements when requested by a remote computer. In short, I am saying that nobody will access your website unless your web host approves it. For this reason, you will want to have a reliable web host: a pro in this game. I have always recommended BlueHost because:

a. It is so easy to use

b. Signing up takes just moments

c. You get a free domain once you purchase a hosting package

d. They offer excellent 24/7 customer support if needed

Their service is also very affordable so you don’t need to invest much at all to get your advice blog up and running.

[Disclosure] BlueHost gives me a small commission for my referral and it doesn’t add anything to your cost. This helps me continue to provide lots of free information for bloggers.

3. Install WordPress

WordPress is a web software that ensures you have an easy time designing and running your blog. To install on to your BlueHost is pretty straight forward. To better grasp this step, please refer to the video below. FYI: WordPress powers 80% of the world’s blogs! How about that for dominance?

I’ve found that it is easier to follow these steps if you can actually see them being done. With this in mind, I’ve created a simple video that will walk you through each of these steps so you can see how it is done yourself. Watch this video, and then follow the link, which will bring you to BlueHost where you can purchase your domain and hosting.

Tips for the beginner Advice Blogger

Now that you have your blog in place, it is time to add more spice to it. I have compiled a few tips to get your ball rolling. Congratulations for creating your own blog.

  • Pick a topic
Hello, you can’t blog on every topic. You must decide which niche you are most interested in. What kind of questions are you asked most? Who is your target audience? You should give this a great deal of consideration. You can play jack of all trades before you pick what excites you most.
  • Get RSS feeds on your blog
When it comes to giving advice, some people like to remain anonymous. To help your visitors stay “anonymous”, then you better have RSS feeds. RSS feeds also help to promote your blog quickly and effectively.
  • Plan Ahead
You don’t have the leisure of scrabbling a last minute article. If you want to be successful in your advice blog, then you better have an editorial calendar for yourself. It helps you stay on track and sort the flow of content. Additionally, have a grand master plan extending beyond six months. This will keep you motivated and will ensure you continue producing quality work for weeks.
  • Write Regularly
A good blogger is consistent. If you decide you will be making weekly blog posts, then stick to weekly. This is the reason I asked you to first have a master plan. If you plan well, then you will be in a position to tell how many articles you can produce over a given period of time.
  • Interact with your visitors
If you are consistent in producing high quality blogs, it will not take you long to attract a loyal following. These will be the guys who will be asking for advice, leaving comments on your blog, and most importantly, driving traffic to your site.

Recommended WordPress Plugins for advice Blogs

A WordPress plugin is a simple line of code, more like web software, that adds special features to your WordPress powered blog site. I have compiled a list of WordPress plugins that will enhance user experience in your WordPress blog.

  • Post Footer
A simple plugin that places an ad (of your choice) between your content and the comments on a single post page. The in-dash user interface allows you to skip the code-skimming to replace or change the ad.
  • Google Translate
One of the greatest things about fashion is its international appeal and influence. This plugin allows readers from all over the world to translate your site via Google.
  • Future Calendar
This plugin is especially good if you a) have your blog organized to the point where you only make x posts per day, or b) manage a multi-author blog. It allows you to see what days you have posts scheduled for from the edit post page. It’s also available as a widget to show your readers when they should expect to see posts.
  • UBillboard 3
This plugin adds a highlights slider on your homepage. This feature is available with most themes, but in case you fell in love with a theme that doesn’t have this feature, then, you are good to go with this plugin.
